Treatment Plant For Sewage
Cesspools, Septic Tanks and Package Treatment Plants
Cesspools should only be used if there is nowhere for the waste to soak away or there is no watercourse for the treated effluent to discharge into.
Septic Tanks allow solids to settle and separate from the liquid, which then soaks away via a network of pipes into the ground. They should only be installed where the soil allows liquid to drain away and pollution of a watercourse is not possible. Percolation tests will establish whether ground conditions present this as a suitable option. Building control is required for the installation of a septic tank.
While Package Treatment Plants are more expensive than a Cesspool or Septic Tank, they produce a standard of treated effluent that meets current discharge regulations set down by the Environment Agency. They require an electrical supply, but have low running and service costs. Once installed, the treated effluent can legally discharge to a watercourse, providing that *consent to discharge is obtained. This can be applied for on the customer’s behalf, should it be required (although all tanks will need to be registsered with the Environment Agency), and advice can also be offered with regard to planning permission and building regulations.
